Mediocre atmosphere and average food don't completely overshadow the fantastic beer selection and superb service at this local Allston haunt. With over 100 beers on tap and countless more in the bottle, there is never a shortage to choose from. Even the most adept beer aficionado will find something to please the palate.
Additionally, the waitstaff makes you feel right at home. One waiter in particular is especially inviting. He has tended to my every need many times in the past 6 months. At first his overly friendly demeanor and penchant for sharing just a little too much information every time he comes to the table was mildly off-putting. However, in time I have come to realize his friendly attitude is part of the charm that makes Sunset such a great place to begin one's evening.
Unfortunately, I wouldn't recommend the food...other than the sweet potato fries, which are, most nights, served just how you like them..."hot and crispy!"
Every neighborhood should have a place like Sunset. They've got the biggest beer menu I have ever come across a huge menu with something for everyone, a bunch of plasma TV's, intelligent bartenders and a fun atmosphere.
Positives:
- Sweet Potato Fries: pure awesomeness made better with the raspberry sauce
- Nachos: put pulled pork on them add guac and sour cream you've got a meal for 8. Even the half order is too much for 2.
- Dedication to specific breweries; I find it encouraging that they always have something from Bear Republic, something from Brooklyn, something from Sixpoint (one of my new favorite breweries). I often order by brewer over the type of beer because I like to try new things that I know will be made well.
I do have a few concerns which is why they only get four stars:
- Tap Lines: at times the beer seems to come out tasting a little off -- they need to clean the tap lines more
- Food: apps are great and huge, but nothing on their dinner menu has wowed me. Also the portions (and as a result the prices) are way too big
- Service: it can be hit or miss; i've had good, bad and awful
- Downstairs: why does it SUCK SO MUCH? I've gotten to the point that if I have to sit down there I'd rather go elsewhere. I say whenever I get seated "table for x -- we'd like to sit upstairs" -- I recommend you do the same. I fundamentally don't understand why they put people down their at non-peak hours. Bizarre.
A star for excellence in each of the following:
1: BEER!!! they have some ridiculous amount of beers so theres always a great selection of great micro brews
2: The food is fantastic, I've never had a bad meal here
3: Lots of bang for your buck- great food, good prices, good atmosphere
4: Selection: endless beer/food possibilities. extensive food and drink menus
5: The best sweet potato fries: these definitely deserve their own star
The place we go when we're looking for beer selection. My husband LOVES the sampler.
How can they keep that many tap lines so fresh...don't know, but they do it.
Cheers to Marc and Sunset!
The best beer selection in the universe. Literally, if you've had it in another country, you can likely get it here. They have a variety of Lambics and Meads. Delicious!!
Hands down the best beer bar in Boston. Probably one of the best in the country. An untouchable beer selection including 112 taps plus 300 bottles should put them in a class by themselves. Always the first to get the rarest of beers, and the best part is everything is always fresh! For sunset not to win best beer selection would be a crime.
The biggest beer selection I've ever seen. Surprisingly great food. Mixed crowd. Good service. I love this place.
More options for beer than you could imagine, on tap and in bottles. Sunset has good "beer" food, too. Plus, since they've expanded, the place is a lot nicer and has more tables for those busy weekend nights.
I just recently discovered this place and I keep going back. Not surprisingly I've managed to never get the same beer twice -- even though I taste at least five each time. I have never seen a selection like this, both on tap and in the bottle. Refreshing in every sense
solid variety of beers available on tap and bottles; always fun to try to choose a different one each visit.
No question here. Over 300 constantly changing beers, seasonal selections, and a menu-guide that you can take with you. Plus, it has outstanding food and is open late.
They have such a wonderful selection of beer. Plus, they have a great menu ~ lots of choices all around, as well as an all around great atmosphere. Love it!!
Sunset has an endless list of beers, presented in categories so you actually know what you're drinking and what it may taste like. The bartenders are quick to give samples and are attentive to the patrons
Come on ... they serve over 500 beers (over 100 on tap and the rest in an unbeatable bottle selection)! Meade, stout, ale, beer-tails ... I feel like a kid in a candy store! The servers know what they are talking about and can reccomend a great beer with dinner or dessert. There is no way another Boston Beer Bar can beat this place.
112 taps 300+ bottles of craft beer ,available in sizes from 2oz. to ten different vessels to get drafts in. Always the newest beers you'll find.Beer is fresh and variety of proper glassware for each style.Fun stuff like beer clubs, yard clubs, kick the keg etc.. Great for beginners or the serious beer afficionado. table taps yards and occasional hop randall tap upon request. The weekly beer menu is set up by style with beer advocate ratings alcohol percentages and fun info. meads a honey/hop beverage over 10 choices 2 on tap. While there are some great places to drink beer and i have spent my life visiting them you'd be hard pressed to find a more extensive selection with the diversity of offerings and a huge following of 20 year regulars who keep coming back for beer they cant find elsewhere and food that is consistently pleasing huge crowds.P.S- Not tooting my own horn, I'm a beer lover and can back this up Cheers- Marc @ Sunset Grill & Tap
The Sunset has the most beer on tap, and many many in bottles. It's totally impressive, and although I love the Beer Works' beer, they are only winning because they have a voting campaign.
They have over 300 beers, with about 100 of those being drafts. What could be better???
100+ taphandles, 300 bottles, great food. The place to go to try new beer in Boston.
As this is the competition for beer selection, once must point to the RIDICULOUSLY HUGE beer pamphlet that is handed to you at Sunset. I have never seen, nor heard of, so many beers in my life. I aspire to try them all, one by one!!
Wow! Sunset has a full book of beers as a menu. I've never seen so many, or knew they could all exist in one place. They even get creative with offererings such as the "Black and Blue" which tops a blueberry beer with Guinness. Great place, where selection cannot be beat!
simply put, the Sunset has the widest selection of bottles and taps around from summer lawnmower beer to the best of new england craft beers. no other beer bar even comes close.
